Freelance Graphic Designer
Two weeks ago, our design and graphic arts class had a reunion. I was hesitant in attending. I felt as if I wouldn't measure up to some of the accomplishments of my fellow classmates. Some have taken on jobs with well known and highly respected design firms, others were running their own design studios, and a couple had even taken the route of becoming a freelance graphic designer.
Yet here I was, still stuck with a menial nine to five job, nothing to do with design or graphics, and I resented the fact that I did not take the chance to set out on my own as a freelance graphic designer. But things changed. At my reunion, I met a long time friend who was a freelancer and he told me how many projects he was working on, keeping him busy for hours and hours each and every day.
I was amazed! Working as a freelance graphic designer he had the best projects and the chance to spend his time on the work that he truly found stimulating and rewarding. So I decided to work as a freelance graphic designer part time, you know, on the side while staying with my nine to five, at least until things got rolling.
It was only a matter of months before I started taking on new projects every week, each one more exciting than the one previous. I was so glad my friend had told me about being a freelance graphic designer. Now I'm working with top design studios and interactive firms, doing projects at home in my spare time, and earning quite a significant amount of money, more than enough to quit my day job!
So I did. And now I'm a full time freelance graphic designer and I'm enjoying every second of it!
