Freelance Journalist
Freelance journalist - doesn't it sound like a grand title
for a profession?
When I was in school, I dreamed of being a freelance journalist.
The lifestyle sounded so exciting. You could be involved in all
kinds of interesting projects, traveling round the country,
interviewing famous people, then writing a creative piece based on
your research.
For me, that kind of lifestyle would be a dream come true. I
imagined myself discussing important assignments with other
freelance journalists then beating them to the scoop on the job.
In the end, I did become a freelance journalist, although it
took me a few years to get there. I did a degree in English first,
then joined a company as a junior on a training scheme. Once I got
my qualifications, I worked with several newspapers and magazines,
getting a lot of useful experience along the way.
After a few years, I decided it was time to go out on my own as a
freelance journalist. I knew it would be tough at first, but I
had some good contacts who I knew I could rely on to give me some
work. The first week was the scariest part, as the phone
didn't ring, and I thought I would have to beg for my old job back.
But the next week, the phone rang on Monday, and I had a major
assignment. I was off. I was going to be a freelance journalist,
and I was determined to make a success of it. Nothing would stop me
from making the grade.
I did it - and I'm still very proud of being a freelance
journalist.
