Freelance Illustrator
Freelance illustrators are interesting people, with
interesting lives. To be able to make a living simply from your
illustration skills is quite an achievement.
Of course, you need to have natural talent, as well as a great deal
of skill and expertise. Even then it can be difficult to break into
the market. But if you have got what it takes, there is everything
to look forward to.
To build a career as a freelance illustrator, you need to
know where to look for work. It won't just fall into your lap, so
you will have to go out and look for it. Try to be creative in your
thinking. Local studios may be the obvious place to start, but think
hard about other companies who may need your services. Be prepared
to travel a little - a client a little distance away may have enough
work to keep you busy for ages.
Partnerships can also be very productive. You might consider teaming
up with a writer or some other kind of designer. That way, you have
more to offer potential clients. And your partner may bring you work
from other clients, too.
Making a living as a freelance illustrator is not always
easy, but it can be very rewarding. It's a great way to pay the
bills and have fun at the same time. And as your career progresses,
you will build up a great portfolio of work that you can show other
people, and which will represent your life's creative work.
Remember that you need to have the right tools and equipment to
succeed, even though freelance illustrators' requirements are
simpler than many in this respect.
