Freelance Illustration
Freelance illustration was a career choice that came
late in life for Frank Habden. He had already had a successful
career in the real estate industry, but felt that he hadn't achieved
anything worthwhile. Yes, he had sold lots of houses, and helped
hundreds of families to find their dream home. But Frank wanted
something more than that. He wanted to create something of value
that would last for ever.
That's when he turned to freelance illustration. It was
something he had dabbled in at school, but he had never really taken
it seriously beyond that stage. During his free time at weekends, he
liked to undertake some illustration projects, but that was just for
fun.
But all of a sudden, he realized that this was the vacuum in his
life that he had been waiting to fill.
"I started to think about freelance illustration as a real
career choice," he says. "After giving the matter careful thought, I
resigned from the real estate company, and started looking for
projects I could do. At first, the silence was deafening. But then I
approached a big studio in the next town, and asked if they had any
work for me. My portfolio was a bit slim, but they decided to take a
chance, and gave me a project to do. After that, it was easy."
Frank has a natural feel for freelance illustration, and has
found it easy to adjust to his new lifestyle. Now instead of
valuations and viewings, he spends his day thinking of creative
strategies and ideas.
"It's very rewarding," he says," and a great deal of fun, too. I am
so glad I decided to take this path, it's going to change everything
for me."
