Creative writing jobs are hard to define.
What exactly do we mean by a creative writing job? We could
define this as meaning developing something which is 100 per cent
totally creative, such as writing a novel. In this case, you are
applying your imagination to create something wholly new and
different, something which has never been seen before by the public
at large.
But for most people looking for a creative writing job, it
means looking for a paying position which has an imaginative
dimension. This could be involve working as a copywriter with an
advertising agency or marketing company. This would involve writing
brochures, annual reports, company magazines, press releases and
advertisements. The advertisements in particular can be a very
creative statement.
What other kinds of creative writing job are there? Well, you
could be hired to write columns for newspapers or magazines. These
positions involve a great deal of creative thinking, as you are
charged with the task of coming up with a new and interesting angle
on various subjects. Each week, you need to think of a new and
interesting angle to discuss and interest the publication's readers.
You could also write scripts for various projects. At the top end of
the scale, of course there is the Hollywood scriptwriter - a real
creative writing job. You could get paid very well, and even win
an Oscar or two. But there are more modest scriptwriting
opportunities, too. You could write scripts for corporate videos,
television programs of multimedia projects.
